About Ember-panther
Preserving history through reclaimed wood craftsmanship
Our Beginning
Ember-panther started in a small garage workshop in 2018, born from a simple observation: beautiful wood was being discarded while mass-produced furniture filled Canadian homes.
Our founder spent years working in construction and renovation, watching as century-old barn boards, weathered fence posts, and aged hardwood flooring ended up in dumpsters. The decision to save these materials and give them new purpose seemed obvious.
What began as a personal project quickly grew into a dedicated practice. Word spread among friends and neighbours, and soon requests came in from across Ontario and Quebec.
What Guides Our Work
Material Respect
Every piece of reclaimed wood carries decades of history. We approach each material with care, working to reveal rather than obscure its natural character and past life.
Environmental Stewardship
Using salvaged materials reduces demand for newly harvested timber and keeps usable wood out of landfills. Our work extends the life of resources already in circulation.
Honest Craftsmanship
We rely on traditional joinery techniques that have proven themselves over centuries. Our work avoids shortcuts that compromise longevity or structural integrity.
Local Connection
Our materials come from within our region, supporting local deconstruction efforts and maintaining a traceable connection between finished pieces and their origins.
Our Material Sources
We maintain relationships with demolition contractors, farmers, renovation companies, and municipal salvage programs throughout Ontario and Quebec.
When a barn comes down, when a historic building gets renovated, when storm damage fells a significant tree, we receive calls. Our team evaluates each opportunity, selecting materials that can serve new purposes.
This network means we work with diverse wood species and histories: Douglas fir from industrial buildings, oak from century homes, maple from urban streets, pine from agricultural structures.
The Workshop
Where salvaged materials become lasting pieces
Our workshop operates from a converted warehouse in Toronto's west end. The space accommodates material storage, drying racks, workbenches, and finishing areas.
We prioritize hand tools where possible, using power equipment only when necessary for efficiency or precision. This approach allows us to respond to the unique characteristics of each piece of salvaged wood rather than forcing it into standard processes.
Wood often requires months of conditioning before it can be worked. We maintain controlled storage environments that allow materials to acclimate gradually, reducing the risk of warping or cracking in finished pieces.
Our finishing approach emphasizes natural products. We use plant-based oils, beeswax, and traditional techniques that protect surfaces while allowing wood to breathe and age naturally.
Every project receives documentation: photographs of the original material, notes on its source, and a certificate that accompanies the finished piece. This practice honours the wood's history and provides lasting provenance for our clients.
Looking Forward
As construction and renovation continue across Canada, the supply of reclaimable wood remains substantial. Our goal is not rapid growth but sustained quality: taking on projects we can complete with care, expanding our material knowledge, and building lasting relationships with clients who value what we create.
Each piece we complete represents a small intervention in the cycle of disposal and replacement. We believe that meaningful objects, made well from materials with history, contribute to spaces that feel genuinely personal.
